Why Accounting?

Accounting is far more than taxes and bookkeeping — it's the language of business and one of the most versatile degrees you can earn. It splits into two broad worlds, public and private (industry), each with its own set of careers. Here's a look at the niches most people never hear about until they're in the room.

Public Accounting Serve Many Clients

You work at a firm — Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG), national, regional, or local — serving a portfolio of clients across industries. It's the classic launchpad for the CPA and a fast track to broad exposure.

  • Audit & Assurance — verify financial statements and test internal controls so investors and regulators can trust the numbers.
  • Tax — prepare and plan taxes for companies and individuals, and advise on strategy through an ever-changing tax code.
  • Advisory & Consulting — risk, valuation, M&A due diligence, transaction services, and tech/digital transformation.
  • Forensic Accounting — investigate fraud, support litigation, and serve as an expert witness.
Great for breadth, mentorship, and earning the CPA early in your career.
Private / Industry In-House at One Company

You work inside a single organization — from startups to Fortune 500s, nonprofits to sports teams — owning the financial story of that business. Often a better work-life balance and a path into business leadership.

  • Financial Reporting / Controller — own the books, run the monthly close, and produce GAAP financial statements.
  • FP&A — budgeting, forecasting, and partnering with leaders to drive business decisions.
  • Internal Audit — evaluate controls, risk, and compliance from the inside.
  • Cost / Managerial — product costing, margins, and operational decision support.
  • Treasury & Corporate Tax — manage cash, financing, banking relationships, and in-house tax planning.
Deep ownership of one business — and a common route to CFO.

Specialized & Emerging Paths

The CPA opens doors well beyond a traditional firm or finance department. A few directions our members explore:

Government & Nonprofit

Roles at the IRS, GAO, FBI, state and city agencies, or mission-driven organizations — including fund and grant accounting unique to the public sector.

IT Audit & Systems

The intersection of accounting and information systems (MIS) — cybersecurity risk, ERP implementations, data analytics, and SOC reporting.

ESG & Sustainability

A fast-growing field assuring and reporting on climate, social, and governance metrics as these disclosures become mandatory worldwide.

Entrepreneurship & Finance

Investment banking, private equity, financial analysis, or running your own firm — the financial fluency to start, value, and scale a business.
